“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie — deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.” These golden words were said by John F. Kennedy back when he was President of the United States between 1961 and his untimely death in 1963.
Fast forward 50 years and today we live in a world where such a statement still has a huge significance to our lives. In our tiny rock we proudly call home we are currently living under a government that have built themselves a myth. With a mixture of strong shows in various elections, a combination of many things that resulted in PL having a 36,000 victory back in 2013, a caucus of well primed PR stunts and an unbreakable image built for Joseph Muscat; The Labour Party has managed to build a myth. A myth that is based on a true story, but still a myth none the less.
Up until the early hours of Saturday the 18th of April 2015 Dr. Muscat was invincible. He could do no wrong and no matter how much his stooges messed up, his image was still supreme. Not even when Manuel Mallia’s driver allegedly attempted to kill someone did Joseph Muscat’s image get tarnished. Not even when Joseph Muscat’s main electoral promise, the building of the Gas Powered Power Station exploded in his face (pun intended) and didn’t materialize, did we see Muscat’s approval ratings twitch; however low and behold something else was happening without Muscat’s knowledge.
The Opposition, led by the remarkable Dr. Simon Busuttil was managing to sell its very simple message. A message of hope, a reassuring message that the Nationalist Party, really and truly is a rejuvenated party. The Nationalist Party is now once again the party where one can freely discuss his ideas and the party where HONESTY is KING. Thanks to Dr. Busuttil this message was slowly being accepted and believed by the Maltese electorate. Without much pomp, the people spoke. The people went out there and casted there votes and once again the people changed the future of our country. As of last Saturday 18th April 2015, Joseph Muscat wasn’t invincible anymore. Finally Joseph Muscat bled.
As described by Dr. Busuttil, the PN are now back in business. In less than a year the PN managed to reduce the support difference by half and are now once again a worthy opponent to Muscat’s government. The PN are now a better alternative for the current government and come next General Election, the PN will be in for a good opportunity to give the public what’s good, what’s right and what’s just!
Muscat’s myth is now destroyed once and for all, just as the PN were capable of overturning a 500 vote deficit to win back St. Paul’s Bay, the PN are now capable of doing things that up until last Saturday’s many thought weren’t possible.
This isn’t a time for celebration, this is merely a time for realization that we’re ready to work. We’re ready to work harder than ever, with more passion that we ever had before. We’re still a long, long way away from being ready, but this was an important start. Dr. Simon Busuttil has shown and proved to everyone what the party insiders always knew, that he is a winning leader and that results can and WILL be delivered with hard work and perseverance.
