The world got to know about the damning Panama Papers last Sunday and in less than 48 hours the Icelandic Prime Minister has resigned. Throughout the world serious repercussions are being felt with calls for resignations for anyone involved in this largest ever scandal. Yet in this tiny jewel of an Island things aren’t done the same they are done all over the world.
It’s been more than 7 weeks that we knew that Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri have companies in Panama, yet 7 weeks later our Prime Minister is still defending them. Not only that, Joseph Muscat felt that it was justified for him to go for a luxurious holiday with his family during this turmoil, a holiday which we had to be reminded about it by our very own Eva Peron during her now infamous outburst when trying to defend why the organisation she endorses haven’t paid the inmates up until that time.
Yes unfortunately on this tiny rock, things are done differently. In Malta, if God forbids, you fail to walk behind the statue of our Lady of Sorrows once a year you are deemed a sinner, if you fail take a selfie of yourself while you’re donating to L-Istrina on boxing day then you are deemed as inhumane, if you don’t declare your support to England or Italy every other summer in the Euro’s or the World Cup then you are deemed as anti-traditionalist; yet in Malta if the Ovaltine Minister (remember the “For Health and Energy” advert?) opens a company in Panama hidden in a trust in New Zealand, according to the Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Muscat, that’s the most common thing rich and successful people do.
I’m actually quite sad to see that Malta’s name is being dragged into this farce. The past Prime Ministers worked so hard to build a fantastic name for our country, only for it to be dragged through this mud due to Joseph Muscat’s continuous defence of Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri. If Joseph Muscat had Malta’s best interests at heart he would have kicked them both out 7 weeks ago, yet unfortunately it seems that Joseph Muscat is more interested in safeguarding his inner circle’s best interest rather than that or our countries.
This Sunday we’re being called by Simon Busuttil to join a National Demonstration against Corruption, a call for the whole Nation to stand up once and for all and to make our position clear that we, the people of Malta, will not tolerate anyone to tarnish our reputation. We will not tolerate corruption in our country and anyone found guilty, such as Konrad Mizzi, must go! If Joseph Muscat fails to take action then we will be asking for all of them to go. If anyone tolerates corruption, then he’s just as corrupt as them thus in this case Joseph Muscat needs to act quickly, hopefully quicker than he did in the last 7 weeks.
I am urging each and every one of you, if you love our country, if you believe that corruption have no place in this country, if you want things done fairly, you must join us this Sunday in front of Castille and unite in one voice, together with Simon Busuttil, so that corruption will cease once and for all.
See you all on Sunday!
