Indian carer who allegedly raped colleague held in custody

A 31-year-old man, born in India and a resident in Rabat, was arraigned in Court this morning accused of raping a 23-year-old woman at the Mtarfa Elderly Home.

Sandesha Shetty is accused of raping his colleague last Sunday morning at approximately 10am. The woman works as a maid within the same home. Magistrate Monica Vella banned the victim’s name from being published.

Shetty was also charged by Police Inspectors John Spiteri and Stacy Attard for holding the victim against her will and for conducting a sexual act without consent. He is also charged for conducting intimidating and degrading acts against the same victim. Shetty pleaded not guilty against all the charges brought against him. Shetty’s defence team has not requested bail and therefore he has been remanded in custody.

Last Sunday Net News first broke this story. Both the Police as well as the Secretariat for Active Ageing subsequently confirmed the incident and the ongoing investigation. Dr Franco Debono and Dr Amadeus Cachia are defense counsel for the accused.
