The victims of the tragic accident which happened yesterday evening on the outskirts of Mosta are 53 and 31 years old mother and daughter from Żabbar.
The head-on accident, which happened shortly after 9pm, involved two cars – an Audi and a Maruti. The two women who passed away were the driver and a passenger of the Maruti. The impact caused the Audi to end up in a deep gutter, where road works are ongoing.
The community in Żabbar are in mourning, particularly the Soċjeta Maria Mater Gratie who saluted the memory of Graziella and her daughter Fallon Mallia.
Graziella’s mother, Lucy and Fallon’s son, Eli were amongst those taken to hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile the messages of support and solidarity for the family have flooded social media, including from the Leader of the Opposition Adrian Delia. The victims were regular PN activists and amongst other things, they were also part of the team of volunteers who were ready to help at the Counting Hall for the elections on 25 May.
The Police, Civil Protection and a number of medical personnel as well as representatives of Transport Malta were present on the scene soon after the accident.
On Saturday morning, in a separate accident, a sports car also fell into a gutter in the same area. Fortunately however, nobody hurt in that accident.
The accident was considered a major one, since additional medical staff were asked to assist at Mater Dei. In fact, Mater Dei management made an appeal on Facebook for people to avoid going to the Accident & Emergency Department unless it was absolutely necessary.
