The Socialist Government confirms that it had no economic plan. It opened up Malta’s borders for foreign workers and relaxed construction permits which spiralled out of control – which resulted in bigger problems for our country.
In fact, during a business breakfast organised by the Labour Party, Minister Edward Scicluna admitted that this Socialist Government has no plan to fund pensions for youths.
Scicluna admitted the country also faces a big problem in the health care sector, since the large foreign population in Malta is adding a lot of pressure on the sector. This is because the workload of health care professionals has significantly increased because of the increase in the country’s population.
Prime Minister Joseph Muscat also said that Maltese families are sacrificing family time to work more because they’re not managing to make ends meet.
Muscat tried to discredit numerous reports, including the Country Report, the IMF, the Greco, MoneyVal reports and several others, saying that only the Eurostat conclusions are considered facts – and anything else needn’t be considered.
Muscat also confirmed another problem regarding lack of cleanliness in a number of towns and villages in Malta and Gozo. He also admitted the need for more consultation on a regional level.
The Prime Minister also reacted to the strong criticism regarding increasingly expensive properties. He then said Muscat that foreigners need to keep coming over to Malta for work, to do those jobs that Maltese would rather not do. This is another confirmation that the Government is relying on cheap labour.
During this business breakfast, a number of representatives of civil society expressed their concerns regarding challenges that many Maltese families are facing, including poverty, pensions and rent.
The General Workers Union said that it is evident that the gap between the upper and lower bands in society is constantly growing. This is why it is necessary that those who are most vulnerable are given more assistance. The CEO of the UĦM Voice of the Workers, Josef Vella said that the working class should not be dependent on part-time jobs and overtime. Workers should be sufficiently paid to be able to make ends meet.
