125,283 votes for the European Parliament elections not yet distributed

39% of voting documents are not distributed

It seems that by the voting document distribution deadline on Thursday 23 May, there will still be a large amount that would not have been distributed or collected. Until yesterday, 125,283 documents were yet to be distributed – that amounts to almost 39% of all eligible voters.

The same statistics suggest that in certain localities including Qormi, Sliema, Marsascala, St Paul’s Bay, Mosta and Birkirkara, there are thousands of votes that have not been distributed. In these localities alone, there are some 42,000 voting documents that are not distributed.

1st May was the day so far when the least amount of European Parliament voting documents were distributed – amounting to just 17,171. The daily average had so far been 28,000 votes.

Officials of both political parties who are monitoring the process are struggling because of a lack of resources, particularly because in reality they are dealing with two national elections, not one. It seems like a number of voting documents for the Local Council elections have been issued for people who no longer live in Malta. This is significantly disrupting the distrubtion process.
