Second highest increase in air pollution – Eurostat

Statistics published by Eurostat for 2018 confirm that Malta and Latvia registered the highest increase in emissions – a confirmation that pollution in our country continued to increase whilst the rest of the EU reduced emissions by at least 2.5%.

When the analysis for the whole year was conducted, the increase in emissions in Malta was the second worse amongst all EU countries. Only Latvia had a worse result than Malta.

In 2018, emissions in Malta increased by 6.7 % – much worse than Estonia, Poland, Slovakia and Lithuania.

The reality is that other European governments did their utmost to reduce air pollution such that countries like Portugal, Bulgaria, Netherlands and Croatia registered a reduction in emissions as a result of political decisions which were taken during the past couple of months, together with a concrete plan for the years to come.

The serious issue of emissions and air pollution was one of the main subjects discussed by the PN in the first days of the current campaign for the MEP elections. Meanwhile, the Socialist Governments seems to have abandoned completely this issue which effects directly the health of Maltese and Gozitans.
